St. Gregory Youth Group Fundraising Email

Hi Friends :)

Here is a link to an iMovie that our confirmation class at St Gregory the Great created in an effort to raise money for a cause that is very close to my heart. I am trying to raise $————– in order to build a home for this family in Mexico. We are working with a non-profit called BUILD A MIRACLE. To date, Build A Miracle has built 185 homes for families in Tijuana that were previously living in extremely dire conditions.

I THINK I CAN DO THIS!…….With your help :)

I am working together with other youth from our parish to raise $10,000 to build a home for the Aragon Hurtado family, whom you will meet in the above video :) Currently the Aragon Hurtado family is living in a one-room makeshift “dwelling”. The cost to build them a home is $10,000 ($25/square foot), and basic furnishings for the home cost an additional $2,415 (details below).

By becoming a part of Build A Miracle, the Hurtado children are also guaranteed support (financial, tutoring, role models) to get through High School (as opposed to typically dropping out of elementary school) and if they do their part (finishing HS and getting into college)……College Scholarships! A complete transformation for them and future generations.

Build A Miracle is a 501(c)3 non-profit so all donations are tax deductible. Also BAM is unique in that 100%, every penny goes to homes and education because there is no overhead or administrative salaries.
If you want to learn more, check out their website at
Buildamiracle.net

No donation amount is too small, every little bit helps! My goal is to have the money raised and the home built BEFORE Christmas, so that the Hurtado family does not have to endure another bitter cold winter. I would LOVE it if you would join in the home building process as well! It will be done in 3 trips most likely….one to mix and pour the foundation, one to put in insulation and drywall and the other to paint the inside and outside of the house.

Total Home Building Cost = $10,000

Furnishings :
Stove with Oven: $200
Cabinet/Sink: $300
Refrigerator: $400

Maddie’s Fundraising idea and email

Maddie set up a “Virtual Lemonade Stand” using GO FUND ME to try to raise enough money to build or furnish a house Below is the copy that Maddie wrote. It went up on the site with several photos from a trip she came on and a website link.

If life gives you lemons…

The people living in the slum just outside Tijuana, Mexico, make the most of what they have even though they have so little. I had a very moving experience in Mexico last year with the grass-roots non-profit Build A Miracle. I was able to help out a family with painting and laying a concrete walkway for their house, but this May, I would like to do even more. As I learned last year, what would really make a difference for these families is having some simple necessities to use in their new houses: stoves, fridges, tables, chairs, sinks, microwaves, etc. For my 16th birthday, I am hoping to raise as much money as possible to make this happen. The spirit of this Tijuana community is contagiously happy, caring and energetic despite the challenges of their living situation. Families of five or more live in one small room, washing their dishes in tubs from a hose, and walking along a plank over the mud to get to their front door (often a sheet nailed to the wood of their shack). I met a little girl, Nubi, when I was helping to paint her house last year, and she was the absolute happiest, full of life little kid I’ve ever met. She showed my the drawings she had done in school and spoke to me in Spanish as if I were fluent though I’d had only one semester of High School Spanish. Her family of four – mom, dad, and 15 year-old-brother – had been sleeping in one bed for her whole life. She told me that her favorite thing in the world was going to school. Unlike Nubi, I have every material thing I could possibly need, and I know that for a lot of people, living without the luxuries we own is hard to imagine. Two of the things I love about Build a Miracle (BAM) is that the people getting the new homes put in sweat equity to build them, AND they make a commitment that their children will finish High School (most drop out in Elementary School, but BAM ensures that the students get the help of tutors, role models and financial assistance.) The people of Tijuana don’t have much, so please help me help them…make a new, safe, home they can be proud of…help me help them make a better life for their children through education…help me take the lemons of their challenging situation and make “lemonade!”

If I raise $10,000 ($25/square foot), I can build a house. If I raise $2,200, I can furnish a house. Even if I only raise $1,500, I can send someone like Nubi to college in Mexico and give her the opportunity to build a better life. Build A Miracle is a 501(c)3 non-profit so all donations are tax deductible.

Dear Confirmation Students & Parents!

Let’s put our faith into action.

If we all work together, we can give the gift of a home to this family in Mexico.

We have the most amazing parish! So far our parishioners are responsible for 88 homes in Mexico – 88 homes in 10 years!

We would like to offer a special gift to all of our confirmation students: The opportunity to serve others. The gift of the feeling you get when using your hands, minds and hearts to help those in need. Learning what is possible when people work together is yet another life lesson and gift to our youth!

We hope that they will carry these lessons throughout their lives. That they learn through this experience, the skills they can use helping ANYWHERE, wherever they find need, whether in Mexico or not. Our hope is to instill in them the desire to be good Christian leaders wherever they are.

So here’s what we would like to do:

1. To raise enough money to build this family a home by Christmas.

2. To have as many students and their families who are interested to come help build the home on 2 different trips in January and February

Please bring in any amount you have raised for this family to each meeting so we will be able to announce each time, how close we are to the goal.
